There are a number of very modern designs on the market and one to consider is the counter top basin, the design is modern and looks excellent when mounted on a nice counter and will suit a well organised couple or family. The potential problems are that these are bowl shaped with a narrow lip and so soap must be placed in a suitable soap dish not on the counter top, the same applies to razors, toothbrushes and combs. There is no room for any of them on the sink surround so go through a dummy run of washing or shaving and see how these items can be dealt with. If the unit and bowl are planned correctly they do have the 'wow' factor. Pedestal basins have been around for years they look neat and all pipe work is hidden, they are substantial in their manufacture and have room around the bowl to put soap and razors etcetera. This system has been given a new lease of life by some exceptional designs, these designs go from a simplistic block design to the arch design and have very clean lines and only require a simple effective tap system to complete the finished article. Semi pedestal designs have the similar range of tops but the pedestal only protrudes below the sink far enough to cover the sink trap and pipe work. This is ideal if the pipe work goes into the wall. There are many other designs including bench mounted basins and inset basins all of which are worth examining. Take some time to get the best design to fit the requirements of the family and go from there.
