If you think about it, the device makes sense. It is often the center of office gossip or school chatter. Employees often meet around the cooler because of its prominence in the office; in schools, it is quite often the meeting place for students. Whatever shape or form they may take, coolers always mark for themselves a prominent place in whichever institution they are placed.

So, what exactly is it? It is basically a device that cools and dispenses water. It is generally divided into two categories: bottled and bottle-less where the former requires a supply of large bottles of H2O from vendors and the latter is connected to the main supply. They are usually mounted on the wall that requires electricity to power the refrigeration unit to cool the water. There are many shapes and sizes, but the most common one is the freestanding floor model, which has become popular in countries where it is not common to drink straight from the tap. There are tabletop or kitchen worktop versions as well which make use of readily available bottles from supermarkets. These are becoming increasingly popular in modern homes and are featured by many interior designers in their portfolios.

Whatever the form may be, these devices employ the same technology of storing and cooling the water. There are some new methods, such as the T6 dispenser, which filters tap water through a double extruded activated carbon block and a UV lamp. However, these are expensive and are generally not used in most institutions.
