If you're remodeling your bathroom then you'll

Scale diagrams are not difficult to draw and they can make you life so much easier when you start to remodel your bathroom. The trick is to use some graph paper to make it easier to keep to all the measurements. I'll show you where to get some free graph paper later.

You could buy some software to draw your scale diagrams

If you like playing about with your computer then by all means go and buy one of the excellent pieces of software that is available for designing home interiors. What you mustn't do is expect the software to do it all for you however, you still have to do the bathroom design yourself. Using software will probably take you longer to finish the design but it should give you a very nice drawing when you've finished it.

If you are a professional bathroom remodeler then software could be a big benefit to you because it will give you a way to re use your design work and provide very smart and impressive drawings to give away to your clients. If you are just remodeling your own small bathroom I think that you would be better off doing it the old fashioned way.

Scale drawing isn't so hard

If you are worried about the words 'scale drawing' then you shouldn't be. It just means that you are going to make a smaller than life drawing of your bathroom but keeping all the distances in proportion. For instance if your bathroom is 8 foot by 10 foot and you have some graph paper with 16 squares by 25 squares then you can use the scale 1 foot = 2 squares. Your scale drawing would then be 16 squares across the top by 20 squares down and leave 5 unused squares at the bottom.

Cut out the bathroom fixtures and arrange them on the graph paper

I think that the fun part of using squared paper to design a bathroom is drawing the new fixtures to scale on graph paper and cutting them out so that they can be pushed into position on top of another sheet of graph paper with a drawing of the room on it. You can spend many happy hours experimenting with different arrangements like this.

Getting your bathroom design right first time

You will most likely have to live with your new bathroom for a long time after the makeover so it pays to spend sufficient time on it at the design stage before you start the work. Believe me it's a lot easier to move a few cutouts around on a piece of graph paper than it is to move a toilet once it's installed.

Draw bathroom walls and floor plans

You will need one scale drawing of the floor plan looking down. You will also need drawings of walls that you are going to renovate. Your wall plans should show the size and position of any windows, cupboards and all the bathroom fixtures.

Talk to your bathroom remodeling contractors before you finish your plans

Your contractors will be able to point out any problems you might have with your plan and suggest ways that you can adjust things to solve the problems. This is a very important part of the project and can be the difference between a smooth remodeling job and a nightmare when mistakes need to be corrected later.
